Will My Patient Pay Out of Pocket?

Aurora Audiology bills all insurance plans, including Medicare, Alaska Medicaid, and TriCare. However, hearing healthcare benefits are often structured differently than other medical services, and coverage can vary significantly depending on the patient’s insurance plan.

Medical Insurance Benefits

Medical insurance typically covers diagnostic services used to evaluate hearing, balance, and auditory function, including:
  • Comprehensive hearing evaluations
  • Diagnostic hearing testing
  • Auditory processing evaluations
  • Tinnitus evaluations
  • Cochlear implant evaluations
  • Cochlear implant programming and follow-up care
  • Other medically necessary diagnostic audiology services

Hearing Aid / Hearing Hardware Benefits

Hearing aids and hearing rehabilitation services are often covered under a separate benefit category known as a “hearing hardware benefit.” Depending on the insurance plan, these benefits may help cover:
  • Hearing aids
  • Hearing rehabilitation services
  • Related hearing technology

Important Things to Know

  • Hearing aid coverage varies significantly among insurance plans and providers.
  • Aurora Audiology participates with Medicare, Alaska Medicaid, and TriCare, but is considered out-of-network with most commercial insurance plans and Medicare Advantage plans.
  • Medical benefits and hearing aid benefits are often administered separately and may have different eligibility requirements.
  • Many insurance plans in Alaska, including Alaska Medicaid, provide hearing aid coverage when eligibility requirements are met.
  • We strongly encourage patients to contact their insurance carrier directly to inquire about hearing aid ("hearing hardware") coverage, eligibility requirements, and benefit limitations.
  • As a courtesy, our team will verify and estimate the available benefits to the best of our ability; however, insurance estimates are not guaranteed and do not constitute a guarantee of payment.
  • See our Good Faith Estimate examples in the No Surprise Act information page (coming soon)!

Is There a Difference Between Hearing Aids and Personal Sound Amplifiers?

Yes. We work with most hearing aid manufacturers and models, regardless of where they were originally purchased. Our goal is to help patients find the most appropriate hearing solution for their unique needs.

In some situations, over-the-counter hearing devices or personal sound amplification products (PSAPs) may be appropriate, particularly for individuals with perceived mild hearing difficulties and excellent speech understanding. However, because these devices are not suitable for everyone, we recommend a comprehensive hearing evaluation to determine the most appropriate treatment option for your hearing and communication needs.
